Birding Trips: Forging a Bond between Father & Son

There are many enjoyable elements to birding. If you ask birders why they enjoy their hobby, you’ll get many different responses.  It brings people closer to nature.  It allows people to observe some of the most incredible creatures on our planet.  It offers people an element of competition, camaraderie and the element of surprise.

But if you ask me, the best part of birding is that it has strengthened and reinforced the bond between me and my sons.  Over the past eight years, I have journeyed across the country with my sons.

It has taken us on special day trips throughout the Gulf Coast. Birding has also been the driving force behind father / son trips to hotspots across the country.  We’ve journeyed across the Pacific Northwest, the Saguaro Desert, the Sonoran Desert, the Great Lakes region, the Everglades, and the Canadian temperate rainforest.  We’ve cooked s’mores over the open flame, waded through rivers, sat in hot tubs, hiked up mountains, and shared a whole lot of laughs.

Birding has made it a great excuse to travel with my sons.  And I hope this is just the beginning of many more trips to come.

To be cont.
